"How come people say 'God' all the time but the minute you mention 'Jesus', people want you to shut up?"

This is the question many Christians ask and many Christian authors attempt to address. I always wondered it when I was a kid. I always thought it was another reason Christianity was "right". Well, the answer I always got when I asked people at my church, and the answer given in most Christian books, is "because of His claims" which is sometimes elaborated to "No one else claimed to be God Like Jesus did. They don't like that. It makes them uncomfortable." Tons of Christians have said this.

Personally, I don't give a shit about Jesus' claims. I don't like it when people talk about Jesus because preaching and Bible-pushing usually follow soon after.

So how about you? Why do you not like it when people mention Jesus? (if it even bothers you that is) Do His "claims" have anything to do with it?

McQ

Well, personally I want people to shut up too, when they mention jesus.  ;)

Oh well.

Quote from: "McQ"I think it's because jesus represents a particular brand of god, and is therefore, more exclusive to the general population. You say "god" and people around the world can unite behind the name...until you specify which "god" you mean. Then they get testy.
I agree.

Quote from: "McQ"what gets me is that I'll go to some of kids' events and activities and they'll have a prayer before or after starting, and inevitably, the person who does the praying does so in jesus' name. WTF? Are there no jews in my community? No pagans? No heathen bastard atheists?  ;)
Aha, to be a child in Sunday school, learning how to pray. They ALWAYS told us to say "In Jesus name, Amen" at the end.

If there was a man named Jesus on earth at this time, claiming to be God's son he would be put in a mental institution. Why is it because it's in a book alot of people believe it?So odd to me.

Exactly!! A few years ago, I read a book called Maggie's Story. It's a modern story-telling of the Jesus story from when He started preaching to His death. ("Maggie" is Mary Magdalene, it's in her POV). Everything is modernized, so His "Sermon on the Mount" and what not seemed a little cooky to me....

I think it has to do with the mob rules/mob mentality thing.Once more and more people believe it ,then that means it must be true. :brick:

Ugh. What is the world coming to?! There's a quote that has something to do with this.... can't remember it exactly but it's something like: "If a million people believe a foolish thing, it's still a foolish thing." I can't remember where it's from (it may actually be someone's sig)... grrr.. that bugs me.

It's a great quote.Such a perfect one for a atheist.

Exactly. I usually use quotes like this when my words fail me in discussions.
